No more books?

In light of my recent post about getting rid of things, I have been thinking about all my books. Now, I am a pretty big fan of books. I don't read as much as I'd like, but I do know that there is nothing like getting engrossed in a good story.

These days I don't have a physical DVD or CD collection, I have a digital one. The question is, could I trade my physical book collection for a digital one as well? I mean, I am curious about those Kindles.

These are the conditions that would have to be met before I will consider starting a digital book collection:

  1. A better book reader. I want a bigger display. And I want it to not be so ugly. (Though admittedly I have never seen one in person.)
  2. If I buy a book it has to be DRM free in a format that I can understand. So a Text file or Latex, HTML or PDF document.
  3. I want all my existing books to be available in this format. (They don't have to be free. )

Now in the age of digital piracy, I highly doubt that my second requirement will be met. But until then, I'm not interested. Which is unfortunate because books are big and heavy. Imagine carrying around a Kindle sized device with all the books you would ever want to read or need? Man, that would be awesome!

booo pdf. i used to like pdf, but it's too slow. and it should not be considered a standard because you need special software to read it. html, text, rich text. that's it for me.
